(SCBE) Social Competence and Behavior Evaluation, Preschool Edition

(SCBE) Social Competence and Behavior Evaluation, Preschool Edition

BY PETER J. LAFRENIERE, PHD AND JEAN E. DUMAS, PHD

The SCBE assesses young children’s social and emotional adjustment to the classroom setting. Completed by a preschool or kindergarten teacher, it is composed of 80 items covering eight basic scales and four summary scales:

Basic Scales

  • Depressive–Joyful
  • Anxious–Secure
  • Angry–Tolerant
  • Isolated–Integrated
  • Aggressive–Calm
  • Egotistical–Prosocial
  • Oppositional–Cooperative
  • Dependent–Autonomous

Summary Scales

  • Social Competence
  • Externalizing Problems
  • Internalizing Problems
  • General Adaptation

While many instruments for young children focus primarily on anger and hyperactivity, the SCBE measures a range of behaviors and emotions—including anxiety and depression—that are relevant to the teacher and parent. It is extremely useful for instructional planning and measuring the effectiveness of intervention. The SCBE is an excellent way to evaluate the young child’s ongoing adaptation to school.
