ADI®-R Clinical Workshop
WPS ProLearn® offers in-depth training that combines lectures, guided demonstrations, and video-based case examples to introduce the core principles of ADI-R administration and scoring.
ADI-R Manual

This introductory clinical workshop for the Autism Diagnostic Interview–Revised (ADI®-R) is designed for professionals with prior experience in the assessment and differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who are seeking foundational training in the use of the ADI-R.

This two-day, live virtual training combines lectures, guided demonstrations, and video-based case examples to introduce participants to the core principles of ADI-R administration and scoring. The workshop includes narrated video observations led by a certified trainer, accompanied by scoring exercises and detailed discussion of coding guidelines. A didactic component also reviews the measure’s psychometric properties and best practices for clinical application.

Following the workshop, participants are expected to engage in additional supervised or independent practice with ADI-R administration and scoring to achieve competency for clinical and/or research use.

This training assumes that participants already possess foundational skills in diagnostic assessment of autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions, as well as experience with clinical interviewing. Appropriate participants include psychologists, physicians, social workers, and other qualified mental health professionals. Participants are encouraged to review all precourse materials in advance, including the hard copy ADI-R manual and material mailed to them.

Materials & Access

As part of this course, you will receive the following:

  • Access to the live, two-day ADI-R workshop
  • Hard copy ADI-R Manual
  • Hard copy ADI-R Set of Interview Booklets and Comprehensive Algorithm Forms for Training
    • The training set includes additional material for practice outside of the workshop

The virtual workshop is online, and access will be granted after completion of registration through an emailed WPS License Key. Materials are hard copies and will be shipped. Participants must ensure they have access to their manual, booklets, and forms during the training to complete the scoring exercises and to code the video demonstrations.

Learning Objectives
  • Describe the core components of a comprehensive autism-focused assessment and explain how caregiver interviews contribute to the diagnostic process;
  • Use the Autism Diagnostic Interview–Revised (ADI®-R) to gather detailed developmental history and current behavioral concerns as part of an integrated autism assessment battery;
  • Demonstrate foundational skills in administering the ADI-R, including use of standardized questions, probes, and interview structure;
  • Apply basic coding and scoring principles of the ADI-R, including interpreting item codes and generating domain scores;
  • Use the ADI-R diagnostic algorithm to determine whether criteria for autism classification are met, and understand the algorithm’s structure and cutoffs;
  • Explain how ADI-R items map onto DSM-5 ASD diagnostic criteria, including social communication and restricted/repetitive behavior domains;
  • Integrate ADI-R findings with other clinical assessment components (e.g., ADOS-2, cognitive/adaptive testing, clinical observations) to inform diagnostic formulation; and
  • Summarize the psychometric properties, strengths, and limitations of the ADI-R to support appropriate clinical use and interpretation.

Participants

These workshops are designed for both clinicians and researchers. Participants could be psychologists, social workers, physicians, and other mental health professionals. The workshop presumes that participants have prior training in diagnostic assessment of ASD and other neurodevelopmental disorders, as well as previous experience with clinical interviewing. Following the workshop, participants should pursue additional practice with administration and scoring the ADI-R to ensure competency in using the ADI-R for clinical and/or research purposes. For researchers, this introductory training also serves as a first step in the process of establishing research reliability on the ADI-R.

Instructor(s)

Each WPS ProLearn® ADI-R Clinical Workshop is taught by ADI-R Independent Trainers. These trainers have completed the initial clinical and research trainings, established reliability on the instrument, and completed additional training with the authors and/or their colleagues.

Please contact WPS ProLearn for details about the specific instructor who will be teaching the course in which you plan to enroll. In the case of unforeseen circumstances, WPS reserves the right to change instructors without prior notice.
