ADI-R Manual
Prerequisites

The ADI®-R Clinical Workshop Refresher Course is designed for experienced ADI-R users who are interested in recalibrating and/or gaining additional experience with scoring. Prior completion of the introductory ADI-R training is required. During the training, attendees will need to have  a copy of the ADI-R manual and a blank Interview Protocol and Comprehensive Algorithm Form (manual and forms are sold separately).

Course Description

The Autism Diagnostic Interview–Revised (ADI®-R) Refresher Course by WPS ProLearn® is designed for experienced clinicians who conduct autism-focused diagnostic evaluations and seek to recalibrate or strengthen their ADI-R administration, scoring, and interpretation skills. This refresher provides an opportunity to review key administration principles, discuss commonly encountered challenges, and refine scoring reliability. Participants will engage in a video-based administration and coding exercise facilitated by a certified ADI-R trainer, with time allocated for general questions about real-world use of the tool. The course concludes with a review of recent research developments, including updated DSM-5-aligned algorithms for toddlers and children ages 4 to 18. Prior completion of the ADI-R Introductory/Clinical Training is required; hands-on clinical or research experience with the ADI-R is strongly recommended.

Learning Objectives
  • Demonstrate a proficient understanding of Autism Diagnostic Interview–Revised (ADI®-R) administration, including how to structure the interview and elicit high-quality examples;
  • Create a plan to address common ADI-R administration challenges encountered in clinical practice;
  • Apply improved accuracy and consistency to scoring the ADI-R, using standardized coding guidelines to rate autism-related behaviors across the communication, social interaction, and restricted and repetitive behavior domains;
  • Integrate ADI-R findings with other clinical assessment components (e.g., ADOS-2, cognitive/adaptive testing, clinical observations) to inform diagnostic formulation; and
  • Describe the psychometric properties, strengths, and limitations of the ADI-R, and discuss how these factors inform the appropriate use of the instrument in both clinical and research contexts.

Participants

These workshops are designed for both clinicians and researchers. Participants could be psychologists, social workers, physicians, and other mental health professionals. The workshop presumes that participants have prior training in diagnostic assessment of ASD and other neurodevelopmental disorders, as well as previous experience with clinical interviewing. Following the workshop, participants should pursue additional practice with administration and scoring the ADI-R to ensure competency in using the ADI-R for clinical and/or research purposes. For researchers, this introductory training also serves as a first step in the process of establishing research reliability on the ADI-R.

Instructor(s)

Each WPS ProLearn® ADI-R Refresher Clinical Workshop is taught by ADI-R Independent Trainers. These trainers have completed the initial clinical and research trainings, established reliability on the instrument, and completed additional training with the authors and/or their colleagues.

Please contact WPS for details about the specific instructor who will be teaching the course in which you plan to enroll. In the case of unforeseen circumstances, WPS reserves the right to change instructors without prior notice.
