Live Webinar: Autism in Adulthood: Navigating Transitions, Health, and Aging
Description of Webinar
Autism spectrum disorder affects one in 31 children in the United States and has been considered a pediatric neurodevelopmental disorder. As a result, most clinical and research efforts have focused on early identification and intervention, creating substantial gaps in our knowledge of how autism manifests in adulthood. But over the past two decades, research has significantly increased in response to the growing recognition of autism as a lifelong condition, highlighting the complex demands of adulthood, including transitions in education, employment, and interpersonal relationships. Autistic adults also experience unique challenges related to health and aging. Moreover, many individuals reach adulthood without a diagnosis or with a misdiagnosis, often after many years of enduring challenges that negatively affect their quality of life. Many have co-occurring mental health and medical conditions, which further complicate diagnosis. This webinar provides an understanding of autism in adulthood and prepares practitioners to conduct comprehensive, adult-focused evaluations that help to clarify diagnosis and facilitate access to appropriate accommodations and supports. Participants will be empowered to promote independence, improved health, and overall well-being in people with autism as they navigate adulthood.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, the learner will be able to:
- Discuss key issues and challenges associated with transitioning from adolescence to adulthood with ASD;
- Identify common co-occurring mental and physical health conditions that complicate an autism diagnosis;
- Describe the key components and procedures of a comprehensive autism assessment in adults; and
- Explain current research on brain health and aging in autistic adults.
