This course will address the connection between mental health and the assessment of diverse populations, including the impact of culture on diagnosis. The implications of misdiagnosing diverse populations are far-reaching and impact the life trajectory of these communities. Solutions to misdiagnosis of diverse populations will be addressed, including the use of various psychological tests and other clinician-based solutions. 
 

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, the learner will be able to: 

  • Discuss how diverse populations, including those organized around race, gender, and sexual orientation, may be misdiagnosed in the assessment process;
  • Describe the far-reaching impact of misdiagnosis (underdiagnosis, overdiagnosis, and incorrect diagnosis) on diverse communities; and
  • Analyze solutions to misdiagnosis based on culture, including the use of various tests and clinician-based solutions.

Webinar Completion Requirements

This webinar provides the opportunity to earn 2 live continuing education (CE) credits for full course attendance. Certificates of Completion equivalent to 2 contact hours of professional CE credit will be provided upon satisfactory completion of webinar requirements. In order to receive the Certificate of Completion for the webinar, participants must be present for the entire course. They must also complete the Post-course Evaluation Survey at the end of the webinar. No partial credit will be awarded.  

 

Presenter Bio


Linda McGhee is a clinical psychologist and nationally recognized moderator, mental health expert, and speaker. She has been featured in the Washington Post, New York Times, Huffington Post, and Grown and Flown. She has appeared on the Testing Psychologist podcast, presenting on unconscious bias, culturally sensitive assessments, and advocacy and assessment. Dr. McGhee was recently elected as APA president-elect of the Assessment Psychology section of Division 12, the Society of Clinical Psychology. She was the past president of the Maryland Psychological Association.   

Dr. McGhee is one of the nation’s foremost experts on culturally sensitive testing and assessment for diverse populations. She trained and worked as an attorney prior to obtaining a PsyD at George Washington University (GWU). Dr. McGhee currently teaches assessment at GWU’s Forensic Psychology program and has taught assessment in the GWU PsyD program as well as the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. She has addressed national organizations, school associations, psychology practices, and school psychologist groups on diversity in assessment. To facilitate these important conversations, Dr. McGhee formed the Multicultural Assessment Community, which hosted its third annual conference in October 2023. She contributed a chapter on the assessment of diverse populations with bipolar disorder to the book Psychological Assessment of Bipolar Spectrum Disorders, edited by James Kleiger and Irving Weiner. She is currently collaborating on a book chapter on the assessment of African Americans in the Essentials series.
