Live Webinar: Ethics Matter: Examining Rule-Out Factors When Considering Learning Disabilities

Description of Webinar

This webinar will explore the domains that must be examined when considering identification of specific learning disabilities. Using the National Association of School Psychologists’ 2020 Principles for Professional Ethics as a framework, the presentation will delve into the responsibilities and ethical obligations of assessment professionals to conduct fair, valid, and culturally responsive assessments. Key considerations include appropriately ruling out exclusionary factors such as visual, hearing, and motor impairments; intellectual disabilities; emotional and behavioral disorders; cultural and linguistic differences; environmental and economic disadvantages; and limited English proficiency.

The session will use case-based scenarios to explore the intersection of ethics, law, local procedures, and unspoken rules, while also addressing how to mitigate implicit bias and navigate systemic barriers. Additionally, the presentation will introduce a problem-solving approach aimed at ensuring ethical practices in assessments.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this on-demand webinar, the learner will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of using a problem-solving model to address ethical issues.
  • Describe sources of influence that can contribute to ethical dilemmas, particularly related to ensuring assessments and resulting decisions meet ethical standards.
  • Design strategies for ensuring that student achievement is ethically evaluated in the context of the specific factors required for exclusion when considering special education eligibility.
