Reconsidering Intelligence Tests for Multicultural Populations in Schools

Reconsidering Intelligence Tests for Multicultural Populations in Schools

Description of Webinar

This online seminar examines the intersection of IQ testing and race and culture. We began by looking back on the goals for the original IQ test, and how IQ tests were later used as tools in inequitable systems, including education. This webinar will address educational disparities including post-pandemic stressors. We will look at the current research about IQ testing, including an analysis of what is being assessed when we assess for IQ. The webinar will culminate by exploring culturally sensitive ways to assess intelligence and ways to incorporate into testing reports the phenomena of culture, trauma, and other related factors.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, the learner will be able to:

  • Gain understanding of the history of intelligence tests and race.
  • Understand the ways intelligence tests are used (and misused) in school systems.
  • Garner insight on educational disparities involving race and ethnicity
  • Using report examples, we will explore culturally sensitive ways to assess intelligence and alternative ways to assess diverse populations in school systems.
