BY NEIL L. MOGGE, PHD

This brief, nonthreatening scale quickly identifies the problems of children and adolescents. With items written at a first-, second-, or third-grade reading level, the MOSS is ideal for evaluating young people who are in trouble at school or with the law. It can be used in juvenile courts, detention centers, residential treatment facilities, schools, and private practice. The MOSS can be used to identify personality dynamics, environmental concerns, treatment issues, and placement needs. It’s an excellent intake tool or outcome measure.

The scale includes 124 true/false items that describe a range of behaviors and emotional states. In addition to 4 validity scores, the MOSS yields 13 content scores and 3 summary indexes:

Content Scores

  • Sexual Abuse
  • Alcohol and Drugs
  • Suspiciousness
  • Thought Process
