(JSS) Job Stress Survey

Occupational stress affects productivity, absenteeism, accidents, worker turnover, and overall health. The JSS assesses sources of work-related stress experienced by men and women, 18 years of age and older, in various business, industrial, military, and educational settings.
Frequency and Severity
Focusing on work situations associated with psychological strain, each of 30 items describes a stressful job-related event. The JSS measures both the frequency and the perceived severity of these events. The respondent rates severity on a 9-point scale and then indicates how often each event has occurred during the preceding 6 months (on a scale ranging from 0 to 9+ days).
The test combines severity and frequency scores to produce an index reflecting overall level of stress. Subscale scores are also provided, allowing you to look at specific components of job stress, such as deadline pressure and lack of organizational support. Individual item scores are often revealing as well.
Raw scores, T-scores, and percentile ranks can be plotted on the JSS Profile Form and easily compared to those of other workers in particular occupational groups. Normative data are based on a sample of 2,173 adults employed in business, industry, university, and military settings. Groups represented include managers, professionals, clerical workers, skilled-trade/maintenance employees, and military personnel. Both gender-specific and combined-gender norms are provided.
Individual and Group Comparisons
The JSS identifies not only stressors affecting individual employees, but also those impacting groups of workers--so employers can compare stress levels across different departments within the same organization. Because the test requires only a sixth grade reading level, it can be used with virtually all English-speaking employees.
The JSS is the first step in improving the work environment, reducing turnover, preventing accidents, and supporting employee health.
